Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state has set up a high powered advocacy
committee to tackle pipeline vandalism in the state headed by the
Deputy Governor, Bar. Kingsley Otuaro and Dr Chris Ekiyor as secretary.
Having recognised the antecedents of Dr Ekiyor as a former president of
Ijaw Youth council during the arms struggle day of the Niger Delta
agitations and as a peace builder/non-violence instructor, the governor
have put a roung peg in a round hole.
Ekiyor, a formwer commissioner of commerce and industry, who despite the
prevailing risks toured all the volatile camps and creeks in the quest
for peace at that time and was largely instrumental in the roundtable
dialogue to disarm and
re-integrate the ex-agitators. This culminated in
the amnesty programme of the federal goverment today. He is very
familiar with the terrain and no doubt will do a good job in the roadmap
to the restoration of peace and normalcy vis-a-vis the task of securing
oil installations in the state.
This the committee will do by finding the immediate and remote causes of
the resurgence of these activities and creating platforms for dialogue.
Other members of the committee includes some serving Commissioners, SAs and heads of parastatals in the state.
Congratulations!
