Two parents of the abducted Chibok girls say they are doubtful about the identity of a second girl, Serah Luka, reportedly rescued by Nigerian troops.

                                                              Two pro-Biafra activists have been arrested in London for leading a protest to confront President Muhammadu Buhari, who in the United Kingdom for an anti-corruption summit.

The men were arrested on Friday, May 13, after they confronted Buhari to demand the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Nigeria Labour union to embark on nationwide strike on May 18

          The Nigeria Labour Congress has reportedly concluded plans to embark on a nationwide strike on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 to protest the increase in the fuel pump price from N86 and N86.50k to N145 per litre by the Federal Government.

In a report by Punch Newspaper, the union made the decision known after an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee on Friday, May 13, 2016.

It was also reported that the strike is expected to commence on Wednesday in other to give the Federal Government a two day period to reverse the price increase.

The meeting, which was chaired by the President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba and attended by all the major civil society organisations based in Abuja, held at the Labour House in th

Speaking after the meeting, Wabba said, “Comrades, we have had our meeting, but we cannot talk to you now. We have a press briefing for tomorrow at 12noon. We will address the press jointly with the TUC and our position will be made known to the media and the country.”

Meanwhile the Trade Union Congress has given the Federal Government a five days ultimatum to meet with labour or face industrial action.

President of the TUC, Bobboi Kaigama, told journalists after its National Executive Council that the TUC rejected the hike in price of petrol from N86.5 to N145 per litre and demanded revert in price.

In his words,  “The NEC-in session rejected in its entirety the astronomical increase in the price of petrol from N86.5 per litre to N145 per litre and demanded that the government should revert to the old price regime with immediate effect.'

Continuing, 'The NEC-in-session gave the Federal Government up till Wednesday, May 16, 2016, to invite the leadership of labour for discussion aimed at determining the appropriate way forward.

'The NEC-in-session also directed the leadership of the TUC to interface with the NLC and the civil society allies to work out plans that would be put in place to protest the insensitive fuel price hike should the government fail to meet on Wednesday, May 18, 2016,' Kaigama said.

The labour unions are currently unhappy with the increase of the price of Premium Motor Spirit by the Federal Government, hence have been meeting to embark on a strike if the FG refuses to reduce the fuel price.

Deadly ISIL Suicide Attack Hits Iraqi Gas Plant

                                                                                     An ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) attack on a state-run gas plant in Baghdad’s northern outskirts on Sunday killed at least 11 people, including policemen, and forced two power stations to suspend electricity production.
A suicide car bomb went off at the entrance of the facility in Taji at around 0600 local time (0300 GMT), allowing another vehicle carrying at least six attackers with explosive vests to enter and clash with security forces, police sources said. Twenty-one people were also wounded.
The armed group said in an online statement that four fighters with machine guns had killed the guards at the plant which it said the Iraqi army was using as a headquarters.
When reinforcements arrived, they set off a parked car bomb before clashing with the security forces and detonating their suicide vests.
A spokesman for Baghdad Operations Command said three of the facility’s gas storages were set alight before security forces were able to bring the situation under control.

 The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Sunday announced that President of Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, will visit Nigeria in June.
A statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by NFF’s Assistant Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, said that the visit was a fall-out of NFF President, Amaju Pinnick’s recent meeting with Infantino in Mexico.

Main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party has broken into factions, SUNDAY PUNCH has learnt.

Already, 12 of its former governors and no fewer than 14 former ministers are leading a breakaway group, which is labelled, Concerned PDP Stakeholders Steering Committee.
The 57-man committee, named in Abuja on Saturday, is expected to take over the running of the party from May 21 when the tenure of the current members of the National Working Committee of the party comes to an end.
Already, the NWC members led by the party’s National Chairman, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, are planning for the national convention scheduled to take place in Port Harcourt on Saturday.
The party is expected to elect new national officers at the convention.

FG Unveils N.5 trillion Economic Palliative Package, ‎

The Federal Government has unveiled a social investment package designed to impact on the lives of over eight million Nigerians. This was disclosed on Sunday by Dr. Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity) to the President, during an interactive session with journalists in Abuja. Akande explained that some parts of this package would become operational in the coming weeks.

             
One of the highlights of the package, said Akande, is the feeding of 5.5 million school children, who are  to be fed for 200 school days in the first phase of homegrown school feeding programme for which N93.1billion was budgeted.

Another element of the package is the proposed provision of soft loans to over 1.76 million traders, market women, men,  artisans and those involved in agriculture.  The loans, he explained, will not require to be conventionally  collateralized.  Some traders, he said, may get about N60,000. A total sum of N140.3billion  has already been appropriated for this in the budget‎.
Also, one hundred thousand artisans are to be trained in a programme for which N191.5 billion has been budgeted.

Also, one million desperately poor and vulnerable Nigerians are to be paid N60,000 stipend this year in a monthly installment of N5000.‎

Five hundred thousand ‎unemployed graduates, the presidential aide added, will be paid between N23,000 to N30,000 per month. They will be trained and deployed to work as volunteer teachers, public health officers, and extension service workers among other responsibilities.
Beneficiaries of the scheme will also be given electronic devices to empower them technologically both for their assignments and beyond.

In tertiary institutions, 100,000 tertiary students in Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) and Education, Akande further disclosed,  will benefit from education grants for which N5.8billion has been already provided for in the budget. This payment, he added, will be directly made to the students.

"When added together this year alone, more than 8 million Nigerians would be benefiting from the Social Investment budget.

"Long before now, the Presidency has made adequate arrangements in the 2016 budget to ensure that Nigerians are lifted from poverty and hardship," said Akande, who operates from the Vice President's office.

He added that jobs would be created by the launch of fresh infrastructural projects and restoration of existing ones.

 "The Buhari presidency is keen to ensure that Nigerians are lifted and that if necessary, on an ongoing basis, palliative measures would always be considered to address the conditions of the people," he declared.
